Background:
Founded in 1711 by John Freeman, the school moved to its current site in 1967. Half the school building was replaced in 1996. It is located in an urban environment and has no playing field, so uses the local park. It was awarded a Quality Mark from the Basic Skills Agency in 1999. It has an 'agreed code of Christian values, based on a firm belief that everyone is a significant person within the school community, with major contributions to make to school life'. The school is concerned with 'the growth of every child' and all policies promoted are 'directly aimed at fostering the development of each child physically, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, socially' and providing the 'appropriate learning situations to enhance this'. As far as possible the school caters for any child who has learning difficulties, and works closely with the Support Teaching and Educational Psychology Service, and with specialist staff. Music and drama are 'strong features' of the school, which has a choir of almost 100, and there is also 'good development' of ICT. Freeman's offers a range of extra-curricular activites which include drama, choir, chess, cricket, netball, music, football, ocarina, woolcraft, folk dancing and playground games. Community links include the local shoe factory, the police, senior citizens and 'strong' links with the church. Children raise funds for charities such as Mencap, Euroaid and NSPCC. Parents are encouraged to play an active role in the life of the school and there is an 'active' parents-staff-friends association which organises social, fundraising and educational events throughout the year.
