Background:

Opened in 1889, the school is situated in the small market town of Rothwell. 'Strong' links have been developed with the infant school and secondary school in the town to 'ensure smooth curriculum continuity' for pupils. The school's friends' association is 'very active' and helps to 'foster good relations' with the local community and raise funds for the school itself. In 1990 the group was responsible for raising the money to build a new library and learning resource centre. In 1999-2000, a major building programme led to the replacement of mobile classrooms with a modern teaching block containing new classrooms and a kiln room. An existing classroom has also recently been converted into a 16-station computer suite. One large mobile classroom remains, to provide a special educational needs (SEN) teaching and resource area. The school employs a full-time SEN teacher and five part-time classroom/teaching support staff. Pupils with SEN are supported in class during literacy and numeracy sessions and also in withdrawal groups. The large playing field overlooks open countryside and links Rothwell Junior to the neighbouting infant school. Lunchtime and after-school clubs include football, cricket, gymnastics, choir, recorders, art, French, drama and netball.
